Celebrate Flag Day at the City of Raleigh Museum. Since 1777 Flag Day has been an annual holiday on June 14th to commemorate the adoption of the United States flag, but did you know the City of Raleigh has a flag? The City of Raleigh is one of approximately 450 cities in the United States to have their own flag. The flag, originally made by Kate Denson in 1899 is now housed in the City of Raleigh Museum collection.
The flag, recently removed from exhibition, is in need of conservation work. Come get a closer look at the flag and enjoy a free lecture. Local Raleigh historian, Joe Mobley, will explore the history of the flag and its role in early 1900s Raleigh. Hear about the flags past conservation and current conservation needs with local textile conservator, Paige Myers, as she discusses the flag and helpful techniques to help preserve your personal heirlooms.
